Pregnancy 101
Your trimester-by-trimester roadmap
A typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks measured from the first day of your last menstrual period. Here's what to expect — and how Vinayaka Hospital supports you at every stage.
Weeks 1–12
First Trimester
Your baby's heart, brain and spinal cord form. Common symptoms include fatigue, nausea and tender breasts. Begin folic acid (400–800 mcg/day) and book your first antenatal visit.
Schedule first OB visit (week 6–8)
Dating ultrasound
Routine blood and urine tests
Weeks 13–27
Second Trimester
Most morning sickness eases. Your bump shows and you'll start feeling your baby move (16–22 weeks). The anatomy scan around week 18–22 evaluates growth.
Anatomy scan (18–22 weeks)
Gestational diabetes screening
Start prenatal yoga / gentle workouts
Weeks 28–40
Third Trimester
Your baby gains weight rapidly and gets into birth position. Watch for Braxton-Hicks contractions and reduced movement. Prepare your hospital bag by week 36.
Growth scan & doppler
Birth plan + hospital tour
GBS test (35–37 weeks)
Care guidance
Four habits our obstetricians recommend
Small daily practices that meaningfully improve maternal and foetal outcomes — drawn from our maternity protocols.
Stay active, gently
150 minutes a week of moderate movement — walking, swimming or prenatal yoga — improves labour outcomes.
Stay up to date on vaccines
Tdap (27–36 wks) and the seasonal flu shot protect both mother and baby.
Mind your mental health
1 in 7 women experience perinatal anxiety. Our counsellors offer judgement-free support.
Watch the warning signs
Severe headaches, vision changes, reduced foetal movement or bleeding need urgent review.
Only ~5% of babies arrive on their exact due date
A full-term delivery is anywhere between 37 and 42 weeks. Treat your due date as a window, not a deadline. If you experience any unusual symptoms, contact our 24×7 maternity helpline immediately.
